Another season is underway!
Please share with your fellow club and association members and friends in the sport. Thank you!
Another season is underway.
While the schedule of competitions and the regulations are still in the process of being finalized, and the USS Congress to review the past year and set the course for the next year and beyond will be held this weekend in Milwaukee, the coaches have been busy gathering feedback and reflecting on the past year as they plan out the future learning from you and the past and tapping their experience to serve you and your dreams and vision for your skating career in the best way possible.
There is still much to do, and, the planning and training is a dynamic process that is never ever complete anyway, but at this time we want to share with you some important dates and information. More will follow as it finalized and details are settled. Please feel free to ask questions and offer feedback, as always, now or at any point in the future, as we look to best serve you and the skaters that make up this sport. Thank you for your hard work and continued best wishes, as you navigate the ups and downs of sport and life, for a rewarding future in and outside of speedskating.
There are three different pages of information here, which are all included below, as well as attached in PDF docs too.
Sincerely,
Carl Cepuran
ASE Program Director
Academy of Speedskating Excellence – 2018-19 Training Options
Year-round long track and short track training programs are designed and run by full-time coaches who also coached the US Jr World Teams in both LT and ST and coached a Long Track Olympian and a short track World Cup Team member last year, as well as 4 members of the Jr World Long Track Team including a Jr World Silver Medalist, and, a Jr National Record holder in the 500 meters, and, 2 members of the Jr World Short Track Team who split time training at home in Boston and Los Angeles. The coaches work with on and off the ice in the weight room and in dryland practices, and, provide coaching at competitions, including utilizing international meets such as the Can-Ams and the Continental Cup. Train with teammates performing at this high level that can push you. Utilize the new padding system acquired this year that has increased safety performance as tested in Quebec. Take advantage of the new Retired Athlete Mentor Program that taps the area’s concentration of experienced Olympians and other high achieving speedskaters. Train in one of only three indoor oval facilities in North America located in an area rich in speedskating tradition, history and current activity. Benefit from the Froedtert Sports Med PEP program, testing by the Marquette U. Human Performance Lab, and guidance by strength training, sports psych, and nutrition experts along with services such as massage therapy for recovery. The region has great access to cycling and inlining locations as well as the largest freshwater lake in the United States. A variety of housing options, educational and work opportunities, a low cost of living, and easy access to the rest of the country with good transportation and a central location help maximize your quality of life and budget.
The year-round programs offer a couple of options including a full-time premium plan, as well as an intermediate plan, and, a club-elite option for those who need more flexibility or to mix their training with their local club resources.
The summer training season offers everything from an intensive rigorous program lasting the entire summer with a 10 week plus 2 weeklong camp option, on down to training for a week, and, custom-designed programs that are 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8 weeks in duration, and, can include one or more intensive, focused week-long camps. The summer program is a good way to get a lot of training in while you have the time, get a head start on your season, build a solid technical and conditioning foundation, see what it is like to train on a regular basis for a longer period of time, or to see how you might feel about a more intensive year-round option in the future.
Other flexible options and related services such as single day drop-in ice or dryland sessions are available, as are coaching services at competitions and equipment set-up and tuning services including rocking and bending of skates.
More information and the ability to register for either the year-round program options or the summer program options or other flexible options and related services can be found at the online ASE 2018-19 Registration Form on our WuFoo page at the following link –
Academy of Speedskating Excellence – 2018 Summer Camp Options
Our camp programs are designed and run by full-time coaches who also coached the US Jr World Teams in both LT and ST and coached a Long Track Olympian and a short track World Cup Team member last year, as well as 4 members of the Jr World Long Track Team including a Jr World Silver Medalist, and, a Jr National Record holder in the 500 meters, and, 2 members of the Jr World Short Track. The summer camps rely on short track ice but are recommended for both long track and short track athletes alike.
2018 ASE Season Kick-off Camp, June 23-27, Pettit National Ice Center, Milwaukee, WI –
We’ve upped the ante this year, capping the camp at 25 athletes and asking that participants be able to qualify for nationals in their age group or be close enough that they would qualify in the age class just younger than theirs. We want to give high quality attention to each skater while also challenging each one to rise to a new personal level. We also will have ice twice per day for two hours each session, with the exception of one day. The camp stresses a priority on excellence in technique, but we also believe it is important to be able to carry that technique with you at higher speeds for longer distances, so we will also attempt to push the skaters to go faster for longer while holding on to excellent technique, learning the value of efficiency, and, building increased conditioning.
We are excited to offer this year two things – First is our new pad system, which is the best protection you can have in a boarded rink and is proven to increase safety in Quebec and Canada; and, secondly, we have partnered with the Wisconsin International Academy to offer a new lodging option for the campers, very close to the rink, and, at a very economical rate of $80 per night while sleeping up to 3 per room.

2018 ASE Lake Placid Olympic Training Center Camp, July 28-August 2, Lake Placid, NY –
This camp price is a bargain when you factor in that lodging and meals are included as part of the price, and, accommodations are in one of only three US Olympic Committee Olympic Training Centers in the country. It is a bonus that Lake Placid has hosted two Winter Olympics and is home to a great deal of speedskating and other Olympic history including Eric Heiden’s 5 gold medal performance in 1980. We will train in the rink that the USA defeated the Soviet Union in hockey. Motivation, inspiration and education abound in a quality training environment under a demanding schedule that instills grit and resilience. By mid-summer, the technique is progressing and the workload increasing. The beautiful setting in the Adirondack village provides for some great opportunities to work and play.
